[Mysterious Girlfriend X Episode 12]
All good things must come to and end. While it was great that this manga was animated, it is sad to see it go. The directing on this show has done a great job of making the romance between Urabe and Tsubaki so enjoyable, as they learn about each other, explore each other’s feelings, and fumble things up from time to time. So on with the finale.
Until now, the series has completely ignored both families. We’ve met Tsubaki’s sister, and made reference to Urabe’s dad, but the parents have never been met. Having your parents meet your significant other can be a nerve racking experience. But leave it to Urabe to find a creative way to meet the Tsubaki’s parents. When she runs into Tsubaki’s sister, it’s an opportunity she can’t pass up. Fortunately, the situation turns into some girl bonding time. Tsubaki’s sister is so great, being some a great substitute mother. You can tell that Urabe has respect for her, and it’s cute. But it make’s Urabe wonder where their Mom is.
When Tsubaki explains that his mom is dead, Urabe asks to go visit the grave. I’m not sure how they think of this in Japan, but it seems like a odd way to go about a date. Urabe even puts on her pretty, but parent friendly clothes to impress his mom. It’s very sweet and heartfelt, and catches Tsubaki off guard. And at the grave site, Urabe offer’s her best dish. To me, this moment is almost like a wife visiting her mother-in-law. There is a sense of commitment from Urabe to be in this for the long run.
And to finish their visit off, as the two of them are standing there, a beautiful moment happens. Not a kiss, but a mutual exchange of drool, where each others thoughts at that moment are exchanged. It’s a great moment for the two of them, something that the director created that isn’t the manga. And when Tsubaki asks if that was inappropriate, Urabe’s cutely responds that that is only the beginning of the inappropriate things to come.
This show has been great. It has had people loving it, hating it, and everything in between. As an avid fan of the manga, I was proud to see the director not only stay true to the story, but even improve things with little details here and there. If you haven’t already, I would encourage to read the manga, it goes quickly, and is well worth it. I would rate this anime with an “Approval” rating, on a scale of “”Approval, Ambivalence, and Disapproval”
